Pixel’s at Dawn as Capcom is called out by Independent Developer

In what looks set to be an outright war of words independent developer Twisted Pixel comes out fighting as they accuse Capcom of ripping off their XBLA hit ‘Splosion Man.

After viewing the clip on Youtube of the new iOS title MaxPlosion from Capcom we have to say that the Twisted Metal claim that the offending game bears more than just a passing resemblance to their own Xbox Live Arcade hit ‘Splosion Man has a little more than similar a plot for comparison.

Maybe the fact that their title is a mere 59p iOS game helped developers assume that there would be no backlash about this, but after hearing the very vocal protests from Twisted Metal spokesmen it has to be said that the two games are more alike in just names and looks. Both feature characters that are, to all intents and purposes, clones of each other. And we don’t just mean that they look the same, good GmP readers, we mean that these two could well have been birthed from the same mushroom cloud, and the similarities don’t stop there as they go way beyond the aesthetic.

Even the gameplay in Capcom’s MaxPlosion could have been lifted directly from a ‘Splosion Man level as the two lead characters jump using the same triple explosion method,  and the fact that leading Twisted Metal programmer Mike Henry has used his personal Twitter account to launch a scathing attack on Capcom calling their MaxPlosion title nothing short of, ” Outright theft! ” goes some way to illustrating the depth of feeling by all the people at Twisted Metal who worked tirelessly behind the scene on the chart topping XBLA title.

A shame then that the sentiment by Mr Henry will not be turning into full copyright claims as he goes on to further to state that the company would be too small to challenge the might of a corporate giant like Capcom:

“It just sucks because we’re too small to do anything about it, and I bet Capcom’s counting on that.”

Best not be jumping the gun on that feeling too quickly there, Mike, as it might just be that Capcom themselves don’t like to being called ‘thieves’ too readily in the world’s press? We’ll bring you all the developments as they happen on this and other great gaming stories.
